Nice to meet you!

I've been photographing Bryce since he was a newborn and we had a fun outdoor session a few weeks ago when the weather was warm, to celebrate his turning two. At the end, this little gentleman shook my hand, nodded his head and said, "Nice to meet you!"

It's one of the benefits of living in the middle of the country ... we sometimes get those nice warm temperatures drifting up from Texas. Tuesday was one of those days and Stu and Mary walked with me through downtown Lawrence so I could take pictures of them for their folks. Thought you'd enjoy seeing some warm smiles from warm hearts in the midst of winter.

I was talking to a client the other day and she told me an interesting story. She, like a lot of us, does not jump at the chance to be in front of just any camera, but she knows the importance and benefits of the results when they turn out well.
She was recently at her job and another photographer was taking pictures of her while she worked. She told me that at first she tensed up, but then she remembered the calm feeling she gets when being photographed by me. She was able to imagine herself at my studio and she relaxed, and the pictures turned out well.
I was pleased to know that my studio and the way I work with people gives a lasting benefit beyond even the pictures, and can actually become someone's "happy place" in their memories of being photographed!

I love discovering the great things people do around Lawrence. Adam started his senior shoot off posing with a HUMONGOUS monster truck, thanks to some friends' unique line of work. Wow! The ground shook when that baby headed back to the barn.

After we took some more relaxed pictures elsewhere in the beautiful setting, he zipped up and down the road on a wheel or two of an ATV for several spectacular shots (and his mom went to hide her eyes so she wouldn't worry so much!)

Adam is an athlete AND a gentleman and offered me a ride back to my car on the ATV. What unexpected fun! Thanks to Adam's sister for taking this shot.

On the fourth floor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, they're doing cutting-edge research on bladder cancer, the mechanics of cancer stem-cell replication, and the healing power of portraits. That's right, portraits. The aim of the project is for an artist to study the interaction between patients and caregivers and to develop a set of paintings based on observation. The work is being done by Scottish-born artist Mark Gilbert. A few years ago Gilbert did a whole series of portraits on some hospital patients in London. And it was during these sittings that Mark says he first noticed the medicinal effect of having one's portrait done. (Video)
